Abstract

Integrated engineering geological, petrographic and biological study of Ateni Sioni Church construction materials aimed to determine the composition of the materials and describe the different forms of deterioration.


Various types of tuff are used as building stone of the church. Depending on the intrinsic properties (composition, structure) and external factors, different types of tuff undergo different forms of deterioration.


Alteration that is developed on the Western Facade of Ateni Sioni Church indicates on limonite formation process.


Irreversible color change of parental tuffs from green-gray and yellowish-gray to reddish-brown and weakening of mechanical properties existing on outside western wall of the church are related to the formation and accumulation of hydrated iron(III) oxide hydroxides at the superficial layer of the stone.
